Helium

Music is a tool that breaks “all borders of nationality, race, and culture. It is made to play with our feelings and emotions, and it is more powerful than language. Our favorite songs come from our feelings, depends on what we feel the song can match with what we are experiencing at the moment. It could be that someone is in love, most likely that person is going to reflect themselves with a song that talks about love. A person that is depressed or sad is going to reflect on a sad song. Though, most songs are molded by their composers to give the audience a song that goes with them.

The song that I chose it is called Helium by Sia. This song is about the love and strength this person gets from being in a relationship. The first two stanzas sound as if this person is hurt by someone she loves, the first stanza goes:

“I’m trying but I keep falling down
I cry out, but nothing comes now
I’m giving my all and I know peace will come
I never wanted to need someone”

Moving forward from the first stanza to the second stanza, where it shows that this person is really in love with someone and that this person makes her happy and gives her strength. The poem that comes to my mind is “A Noiseless Patient Spider” by Walt Whitman, whereas in the second stanza he poet is trying to compare the spider to his soul, as well as the song “Helium” the artist compared her feelings with helium. Even though, the comparison between the poem and the song is not the same, they both compared their feeling with something meaningful. For instance, the first stanza in the poem the poet is contemplating the spider as she makes a web out of her own. at the same time the poet is lamenting because he’s looking at the spider making her home and he hasn’t accomplished anything or isn’t where he wants to be.

A noiseless patient spider,

I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated,

Mark’d how to explore the vacant vast surrounding,

It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself,

Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them”

As in the last stanza of the song the artist is “comparing the uplifting effect of love to the way helium lifts up a balloon.”

Your love lifts me up like helium
Your love lifts me up when I’m down down down
When I’ve hit the ground
You’re all I need
‘Cause your love lifts me up like helium
Your love lifts me up like helium”

I chose to write about these two pieces because as much the poet wants to accomplish in his life like the spider he is watching, the artist wants this person to love her more and more. Both portrays a strong emotion towards what they want in their life.

  1. Interesting comparison of the two symbols!
